Demolition Narrative for 3/21/2019

Here is an update on the demolition, as we move towards the construction phase we will continue to update as information becomes available.

We re-surveyed the condition of the existing column footers vs. the as-built drawings and found that eight of the column footers were not where indicated on the as-builts. Since this creates a conflict with portions of the new structure, these column footers are being removed.

According to LeChase Construction Services, the hammering associated with this removal will be complete by the end of the day tomorrow (Friday 3/21), and Gorick will be fully demobilized by next Tuesday 3/26.

Remaining intact on the site: a portion of the bus garage retaining wall along the west property line to support the Life Long parking lot.

Demolition Narrative for 3/19/2019

The scope of work for the controlled demolition was completed February 26th, see Final Visual Inspection. The continued demolition activity has been centered around the parts of the building that remained after the controlled demolition was completed. These parts of the building have been treated as conventional demolition since they didn’t have any asbestos containing material (ACM). These parts were the ramp and stairs on Cayuga Street, the bookmobile garage at the Southwest corner of the garage, the screen wall along Court Street, and the foundation slab.

The current schedule projection from Gorick construction is that the remaining demolition will be complete by the end of the week.

We will be appearing at the Tompkins County Industrial Development Authority (IDA) on April 10th to apply for a tax abatement. After this step the IDA will hold a public hearing ahead of the May 8th IDA meeting. Assuming the application is approved at the May 8th meeting, pile driving would start within a few days after that.

We don’t have more schedule specifics at this time but will provide them as soon as they are available.

Demolition Narrative for 1/18/2019

An update on the construction progress for the Old Library 1/18/2019.

Demolition continued this week as crews make their way towards Cayuga St. Much of the visible structure is down. Debris is wetted down before loading into sealed trucks. Trucks are sprayed down in the decontamination area just inside the gates. Colder temperatures have caused the spray to encapsulate much of the debris in a layer of ice. Gorick was off-site on Tuesday (1/15/2019) to complete mandatory annual hazmat training. The Tuesday prior (1/8/2019) Gorick was off-site to complete mandatory annual asbestos training. No demolition activity occurred on those days.

Some updates to scheduled activity for the week of 1/21/19.

  • Monday- No demolition work due to impending storm and predicted low temperatures. (Snow removal may occur)

  • Tuesday- Tentative due to storm and predicted low temperatures. (Snow removal may occur)

  • Wednesday thru Friday- Resume demolition of the remainder of the building and continue hauling debris to the disposal site.

All air monitors continue to run properly and to date no exceedances have been noted. Click the button to see a copy of the Air Quality Monitoring Reports.

NYS Department of Labor was onsite 12/27/2018 and observed correct working practices. The Cat 321 excavator was moved off-site after it was completely pressure washed clean, and the Cat 345 excavator was mobilized on site. Demolition Narrative for 12/21/2018

An update on the construction progress for the Old Library 12/21/2018.

New York State Department of Labor (NYS DOL) was onsite on December 17th and 18th to perform site inspections. DOL observed the working practices and inspected worker certifications and licenses.

All air monitors are correctly placed and running.

The North West corner of the building at the 1st column line was dismantled, and a water mister was brought in in place of using the water cannon on the truck due to the high volume of water the water cannon was using.  All debris was wetted using the high-pressure water mister, and the water truck is currently being refilled 2x per day at the City Water Department.  Construction and debris are padded down, wet with water, and covered nightly with 6-millimeter fire retardant poly.

No work will be performed on December 24th and 25th. Demolition will resume on 12/26/2018.

Demolition Narrative for 12/18/2018

An update on the construction progress for the Old Library 12/18/2018.

Demolition has begun on the North West corner of the building.  Contractors are utilizing a high reach excavator to detach the façade and lower to the ground.  A water truck with a high-pressure nozzle is wetting down the debris to maintain moisture levels.  The water trucks are tracked and logged at the City Water Department after each refill.  Contractors will provide traffic control to manage construction vehicles arriving and leaving the site safely.

Delta Engineering is completing the independent third-party sampling and analysis, with air monitors located within the construction zone and two community monitors situated outside of the construction area.  Delta completed background sampling prior to the start of demolition and will provide continuous air monitoring for the remainder of the demolition phase.

Although we are working diligently to take the structure down in an efficient and safe manner, we also want to remain sensitive to noise disturbance for our neighbors.   As such, we have established contractor working hours from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm Monday through Friday.  No demolition is currently scheduled for Saturdays or Sundays.
